About 35 Friends came to stand in silent worship in front of PNC Bank at 16th & Market, Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 13. We were mourning the 29 coal miners from West Virginia who were killed in a Massey Energy mine last week. (PNC has financial ties with Massey) Along with umbrellas, many held signs bearing witness to our concern. It was cold and raining which felt fitting for the somber occasion. We handed out about 200 fliers to passersby explaining what we were doing. It was quite the multigenerational event…we had grandparents and great-grandparents and two van-loads of Swarthmore College students joined us. Here are some photos:

Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining has destroyed over 500 mountains and buried over 2,000 miles of stream, causing increased rates of cancer and birth defects for families across Appalachia. We are calling on PNC to cease financing for ALL companies that engage in this destructive, unjust practice.
