Memorial for the miners – a rainy but beautiful service

About 35 Friends came to stand in silent worship in front of PNC Bank at 16th & Market, Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 13. We were mourning the 29 coal miners from West Virginia who were killed in a Massey Energy mine last week. (PNC has financial ties with Massey) Along with umbrellas, many held signs bearing witness to our concern. It was cold and raining which felt fitting for the somber occasion. We handed out about 200 fliers to passersby explaining what we were doing. It was quite the multigenerational event…we had grandparents and great-grandparents and two van-loads of Swarthmore College students joined us. Here are some photos:
