Take the Pledge: Green Your Money!

Pledge with us to move your money out of PNC if they don’t stop using it for mountaintop removal coal.

Take The Pledge Here!

As Quakers with a historic connection to PNC Bank, as consumers in the Delaware Valley who depend on mountaintop removal coal, and as people concerned for our changing climate, we have been urging PNC to ‘Bank Like Appalachia Matters’ and bring its investment policies into Right Relationship with our Earth.

We are grateful for the ways in which James Rohr, CEO and other representatives of the Bank have acknowledged the health risks and toxic environmental effects associated with mountaintop removal coal mining – which has been linked to lung and kidney disease, and an increase in cancer and birth defects for families living near the 500 mountaintop removal sites scattered across Appalachia. Despite this, however, we know that in 2011 alone, PNC underwrote loans for 4 of the 5 largest coal companies involved in this practice.

There is a clean energy future still possible for Appalachia, but that window is closing with every mountain. As it does, the relationship between our community and PNC Bank is being affected.

As Quakers, the Testimony of Integrity is a central part of our work. This is why we try to “Shine the Light” on PNC’s practices – to repair our relationship, to bridge the gap between the Bank and the people it impacts, to support Appalachians in seeking their human rights.

This is why we are launching this new initiative – to build a movement of people who care about our environment, who are ready to speak together in one collective voice and say no – our money won’t be used for dirty energy!
